Though I have never considered the radio transmission of electric meters to be particularly of concern, I have many friends who do.
May 15, 2013 – The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today approved an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) non-transmitting meter provision for residential customers of DTE Electric Company, effective today.
The Commission on Sept. 11, 2012 in Case No. U-17000 directed investor-owned utilities “to make available an opt-out option, based on cost-of-service principles, for their customers if or when the provider elects to implement AMI.” DTE Electric had already made such a filing on July 31, 2012, in which it proposed an initial charge of $87 and a monthly fee of $15 for opting-out.
It means they have to walk up to the meter and read.
