This weekend will be observed in many ways, some of which will be travel, picnics, and other family related activities. Lest not we forget, the ability to participate in such events freely, has been brought about by the ultimate sacrifice made by those who fought with the ideals of freedom, and liberty for their brothers, sisters, children, and other kin. Fallen heroes, patriots, and believers in God’s bestowing of inalienable rights upon his children, shall not be forgotten.
Memorial Day activities were actually performed for years before, however it was General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic who designated May 30, 1868,
” as a day for strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, or hamlet churchyard in the land…It is the purpose of the commander-in-chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept from year to year while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of the departed.”
It should be noted, that no survivor of that war remains, yet we cannot forget the sacrifices made by either side in our own civil conflict, by those who were righteous in the defense of that they perceived as a threat to their own families, and community.
And, though a Memorial Day is celebrated in many cultures, through the laying of flowers upon the graves of the fallen, it is OUR brothers, whom we remember, and honor, at this time. The Fallen American Soldiers.
God Bless Them.
