Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison and also fined $30,000 for lying to investigators.
In United States v. Libby, the jury convicted Scooter Libby on four of the five counts. One count of obstruction of justice; two counts of perjury; and one count of making false statements to federal investigators.
In Both cases, the actual acts which they presumably lied about weren’t necessarily crimes. The lies however, provided the investigators who had axes to grind with chargeable offenses.
If found guilty of felony perjury, Kwame Kilpatrick could be disbarred, sentenced up to 15 years in prison, and forced to resign as mayor. Does anyone truly believe this will happen? The following from Michigan’s Constitution:
ยง 14 Reprieves, commutations and pardons.
Sec. 14. The governor shall have power to grant reprieves, commutations and pardons after convictions for all offenses, except cases of impeachment, upon such conditions and limitations as he may direct, subject to procedures and regulations prescribed by law. He shall inform the legislature annually of each reprieve, commutation and pardon granted, stating reasons therefor.
So, how about that party loyalty from the executive branch? Get your wand ready Jenny!
