Roads… my original blog entry which brought up the local road commission’s proposal to add a couple position to it’s administrative board was meant to point out that bloat in government solves very little. Beyond that it was NOT meant to examine every little decision that department has made. But with a few really DUMB moves such as proposing additional taxes while at the same time asking for more expense in the form of more paid / benefit laden employees, one would think the road commission head would expect it.
The NEW controversy surrounding Mary Gillis’ trip to Las Vegas costing taxpayers about $3,000 to attend a trade convention is a waste of our consideration.
Anyone who has attended a trade show that serves their own particular industry should understand the benefits of doing so. In addition to discovering new and better technologies which can add savings to operational budgets, there is an added benefit of meeting with others who share the same problems and may have better answers to our own problems.
$3000 is well spent, even if there is only a single percent possibility of efficiency gained from lessons learned during such travel, particularly with a 5M budget. And especially when there are new equipment purchases in the near term.
