Capitol Steps April 14th, 2011

Writer, Speaker, Presidential contender and conservative businessman Herman Cain is scheduled to speak as keynote for a rally and other events sponsored by the Michigan Americans For Prosperity. The one time CEO of Godfather’s pizza is coming to Michigan April 14 to talk to Michiganders at the State Capitol at noon.  Other speakers include Dick Morris, Attorney General Bill Schuette, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, Rev. Levon Yuille, and Justice Bob Young

Cain has received wide support from activists and conservatives for his strong economic knowledge, and ability to turn failing business around.  It is believed by many, that he could do the same in this country.  From his website:

“… I knew that in order to be successful, I had to start from “the ground up.” This meant broiling hamburgers at Pillsbury’s Burger King division. After nine months of a grueling restaurant experience, I was assigned to lead a low performing region of 450 Burger King restaurants. Within three years, we became the best-performing region in the U.S.

I could have been content with my executive role with one of America’s biggest corporations. Instead, after consulting with my wife, we decided to take one of the biggest risks of our marriage: picking up our young family, relocating yet again and accepting the call to become CEO and President of Godfather’s Pizza, a company teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

In 14 months, we turned the company around and returned it to profitability, and I ultimately led my management team to a buyout of Godfather’s Pizza. The company never went bankrupt, and today, there are still hundreds of locations across the U.S. …”

Mr. Cain was called upon during a Clinton era town hall discussion of health care and demonstrated the the president, while being able to do math, was clearly unable to consider the dynamics of business, competition,  and cause & effect.

Cain, who is black, prefers not to be called African-American, suggesting the hyphenated American use is hardly appropriate. “I never embraced that concept” He says in this following video. This video offers a view of his experience with racism in the United States as a child.

Even still, there was a little more.

In the midst of the shouting down by the labor types, the news folks were professional and courteous.  We had to move three times before we would not have the disruptive actions of the protesters trying to take attention away from the interview. In fact, for them to do so in the last try, they (the protesters) would have had to stand in traffic.

The three between myself and their mom are merely three of thirteen siblings.  Given the good sense I have seen through Anna’s writing and opinion, added to their willingness to make a showing into ‘hostile territory’ (500 union supporters to our maybe 20) I would say we have a chance to survive in this country folks.

The temperature was right around freezing but the wind was slight, so it was a pretty good day to be outside  holding signs for “right to work” legislation, and the end of the parts of union structure that threatens our ongoing financial state.

the “No MESSA” sign I was carrying drew intense attention from some folks who tried to argue for the benefits of MESSA.  The inability  for them to come up with a good reason to keep it resulted in their default shouting out condemnations of the Koch Brothers.

As if that explains why the thousands per teacher MESSA added costs are legit.

ONE teacher attempted to explain that the added costs of MESSA was not borne by the tax payers. He tried to say that the teachers bore the cost, and went ape when I asked who pays the teachers’ salary and benefits.

A sunny day marked by a little chill in Waterford made for a good rally setting amidst the abandoned mall buildings in the background.  Something that didn’t even stand out  to me right away, as I have become accustomed to Michigan’s ‘new reality.’  H/T for Lloyd Marcus for actually opening my eyes with his observation on this.

The visit to the Monroe event was somewhat impromptu, and given the lighting, the pictures came out pretty decently. Imporomtu for us, but apparently a last minute support gig for Dr. Rob Steele, who has been polling well against the 55 year incumbent in Michigan’s 15th congressional district. The TPX folks didn’t expect as well a turn out as happened. A pleasant surprise indeed, with about 450 on hand.

As an aside I had an opportunity to chat with Dr. Rob, and found him very approachable.. We have not had so much of that in our congressmen for decades.

Now if this energy can move the meters in the voting booth.. we might have a chance in a couple days.

The billionaire is throwing her money around again, this time to help Jon Stewart’s restoring insanity rally. The studio audience was hoping to get a “NEW TOASTER!!” ..but instead she announced she was buying tickets for all in the audience to go to the rally. Shortly after the show half of the audience threw themselves on to the subway tracks in an apoplectic fit. others just drank themselves to sleep on the corner of Michigan avenue.
