An Open Letter To The DCCC

From the Fair Tax folks.

Recent ads by the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) attacking DR. Dan Benishek have been more than a bit misleading.  This letter has been sent to the DCCC.

October 14, 2010

To the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee,

FairTax takes pride in its status as a single-issue and non-partisan movement. For that reason, your committee’s false and dishonest paid advertisements attacking supporters of the FairTax legislation is profoundly disappointing. If you care about having an honest, fact-based and truthful debate about the issues, we demand that you withdraw your advertising and correct its deep flaws and outright fabrications.

Our only ambivalence in making this demand is that your advertising is helping the FairTax. By running it, you elevate the FairTax in the ranking of issues.

The problems with the ads are numerous. Most prominently, they purposely omit the fact that the FairTax would repeal all federal taxes based on income. This omission leaves the impression that the FairTax supporter is asking for more taxes on top of our current system. That, for a lack of a gentler term, is simply a lie.

Times have changed recently, and candidates are starting to defend their support of the FairTax. Recent experience has shown that candidates who stand their ground win. Any Democratic candidates who allow this advertisement to be run in their districts will be held personally accountable for its inaccuracy. Voters will turn on your candidates once they understand – as we assure you they will – your lack of integrity.

This advertising does a disservice to the Democratic Party itself. Ironically, historically Democratic voting constituencies would be major beneficiaries of the FairTax. Your smarter, better choice would be to embrace the FairTax. The FairTax does not conflict with the Democratic agenda, nor does it propose a change in the size of the federal government, or how it should spend the people’s money.

The FairTax is a better way to collect the money needed to run the federal government. The FairTax is more transparent, more efficient, more conducive to economic growth, and, yes, even fairer to all. One can have a legitimate debate about whether they support or oppose the FairTax. But no one can justify dishonesty in public discourse about this serious issue. In the best interest of our country, we urge you to present the FairTax in an accurate way and withdraw the ads.

Will this stop the DCCC from lying to the public?  Unlikely.  An informed public however can make up its own mind.
